# Free Trade Agreements: Rich with opportunities for those in the know

In today’s fast-paced and evolving global marketplace, countries are increasingly turning to [free trade agreements](https://blog.coleintl.com/blog/nafta-and-other-free-trade-agreements) (FTAs) to enrich their relationships with important trading partners.

 

Since the signing of the [North American Free Trade Agreement](https://ustr.gov/trade-agreements/free-trade-agreements/north-american-free-trade-agreement-nafta) (NAFTA) in 1994 by Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, Canada has entered into new FTAs with more than two dozen countries, including the massive but not yet ratified [Trans Pacific Partnership](http://www.international.gc.ca/trade-agreements-accords-commerciaux/agr-acc/tpp-ptp/index.aspx?lang=eng).

Building on the success of NAFTA, Canada is on track to deepen trading ties with dozens more international markets. Canada currently has active FTAs with 15 other countries, with many more in negotiations or in the process of being implemented. Once they’re all active, Canada will have FTAs with more than 60 countries. See below for a comprehensive list of Canada’s existing and impending FTAs.

Companies that move their products around the world want to maximize the benefits available to them when doing business with free trade partner countries. But, keeping track of which countries have FTAs with Canada – not to mention ensuring a proper understanding of all the regulations and requirements that go along with them – can be a big challenge.

 

Canadian companies are by now well-versed in the ins and outs of trading under NAFTA, but not all FTAs are created equal. In fact, each agreement has its own unique set of rules which can be complicated and can present a moving target for anyone trying to keep track of the ins and outs of each one and the implications for their business.
