**With growing uncertainty surrounding Chinese import tariffs and higher consequent costs, U.S. importers must start reviewing their supply chains and sourcing plans.**

The Trump administration has confirmed that the tariffs on Chinese imports, including those from Hong Kong and Macau, [have now reached 145%](https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/11/china-strikes-back-with-125percent-tariffs-on-us-goods-starting-april-12.html).

In an executive order published on Thursday, Trump announced raising reciprocal [tariffs on Beijing to 125%](https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/04/modifying-reciprocal-tariff-rates-to-reflect-trading-partner-retaliation-and-alignment/). This comes in addition to 20% in fentanyl-related tariffs imposed in February and March.

In response, on Friday, the Chinese finance ministry announced it would raise its tariffs on U.S. imports [from 84% to 125%](https://gss.mof.gov.cn/gzdt/zhengcefabu/202504/t20250411_3961823.htm).

A spokesperson for the Chinese Commerce Ministry stated that the essence of the China-U.S. economic and trade relationship is mutual benefit and win-win cooperation and that Beijing is [open to consultations](https://www.mofcom.gov.cn/xwfb/xwfyrth/art/2025/art_b09f5cf7ab19463491a71a209ebebc3b.html) with the U.S.

## **Tightened controls on low-value shipments**

The White House has also announced further increases to de minimis duty rates to prevent the circumvention of the increased tariffs. The following measures are now in place:

- The ad valorem duty rate for low-value goods has increased from **90%** to **120%**
- The duty per postal item containing goods will increase from **$75** to **$100**, effective May 2, 2025
- The duty per postal item containing goods will increase from **$150** to **$200**, effective June 1, 2025

## **Current tariff status**

Apart from the 145% tariffs on Chinese imports, the following tariff rates apply to other trading partners:

- 10% on almost all imports
- 25% on:
    - Steel and aluminum
    - [Automobiles](https://blog.coleintl.com/tradenews/us-to-impose-25-tariffs-on-imported-automobiles-and-parts-starting-april-3)
    - Non-USMCA goods from Canada and Mexico
- 200% on aluminum products and derivative aluminum products originating in Russia
- 10% on energy products and potash from Canada that do not qualify for USMCA
- 25% on all imports from countries that [import Venezuelan oil](https://blog.coleintl.com/tradenews/the-us-imposes-tariffs-on-all-countries-importing-venezuelan-oil) (signed into law but not in effect yet)

Additionally, tariffs on lumber, copper, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors can be expected soon.

## **Suspension of reciprocal tariffs**

On April 2, Trump officially announced [country-specific reciprocal tariffs](https://blog.coleintl.com/tradenews/the-us-introduces-new-import-tariffs-as-of-april-5-to-address-trade-deficits) on all U.S. trading partners.

A [90-day pause](https://blog.coleintl.com/tradenews/trump-announces-a-90-day-suspension-of-most-reciprocal-tariffs-raises-china-tariffs-to-125) was confirmed on Wednesday—following appeals from over 75 countries.

The European Union (EU), in response, approved 25% tariffs on up to $23 billion in U.S. goods. The [tariffs were later suspended](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/apr/10/eu-suspends-retaliatory-tariffs-us-goods-trump-von-der-leyen) following Trump’s pause on his reciprocal tariffs on the EU.
